4 Ways To Get Yourself Moving Again

One of the hardest parts about getting yourself back into a workout routine is simply getting yourself started. The first few workouts after a week or month long hiatus are always the hardest. You will feel weak and tire quickly, but if you can somehow get through the first few workouts you will start feeling better and have more motivation to keep going. Once you work up a nice sweat, I promise you will be glad you did. I have gone through this numerous times over the last 15 years. So, here are 4 ways to get you going after a long break from working out.

  • Sign up for a gym membership : When I had a gym membership, I noticed on more than one occasion that I wasn’t really in the mood to work out, but because I didn't want to be spending money on a gym membership that I wasn't using, I would just get in the car and head to the gym. I also noticed that in the weeks after I cancelled the membership I didn’t work out as much.
  • Tempt yourself with a treat :  Tell yourself that if you do just one workout then you can go to your favorite restaurant for dinner. It’s likely that you will feel so great from your workout that you will want to skip the unhealhty food and choose something healthy instead.

  • Motivate yourself : Put together a new workout playlist with new and upbeat songs or sign up for a race/walk event in the near future.  Knowing that you will be at the starting line in a few weeks or months may give you that extra push that you need to get yourself going.
  • Drag yourself : Do not make any excuses whatsoever. You have to put exercise as your main priority. If you can manage to just get yourself started you will likely feel good that you did and there’s a good chance you will want to keep going.

For the most part, these suggestions are only short-term solutions (that's the bad news). The good news is that if you can get through a week or two of this then you will start to feel stronger and have more energy. If you can get to a point where you are actually looking forward to working out then you will be more likely to continue on and get into a great workout routine.
